Darlington Raceway 1301 Harry Byrd Hwy Darlington, SC 29532 (map) |
Since the very first Southern 500 race on Labor Day in 1950, Darlington’s tricky egg shape and narrow straights have challenged even the best NASCAR drivers. As of 2005, the exciting Southern 500 is no more. That great race was replaced by an even greater one- it takes place on the eve of Mother’s Day under the illuminating lights of the Raceway.
Built in 1949 and staging its first race the following year, Darlington Raceway celebrated its first winner, Johnny Mantz. Just under a mile and a half, this track takes racing to the extreme in so many ways. With banking angles of 25 degrees at all its turns, Darlington Raceway is rip-roaring fun.
Known as “The track that is too tough to tame”- The racing is tight and still devourers all its cars, drivers and teams who dare to challenge her. The track breathes the history of the NASCAR racing legends that have raced there.
